Acclaimed! Festival of Trees Gingerbread House Entry for 2017

Acclaimed was fortunate enough to enter a gingerbread house into the Festival of Trees this year. So super exciting! The Acclaimed team spent around 30 hours putting it all together, from the designing, to the baking, to the building, and then, of course, the decorating. This year’s theme for the festival was “Baby, it’s cold outside” which is absolutely perfect for what Acclaimed does. Here’s a brief synopsis of how it all came to be…. gingerbread HVAC truck and all. Acclaimed figured a throwback to 1995 would be perfect for this theme, so our gingerbread technicians are sporting Keven’s classic bowtie.

We had spent one day doing all the baking of pieces and designing, using poster board to cut all our parts out exactly how we wanted them. Using crushed candy, we allowed it to melt in windows about halfway through the baking process. After letting our house components cool overnight we then set the foundation in place and crafted up our dear couples home. We then had a magical day of decorating with all the candy possible to make our HVAC dreams a reality.

Would you believe the hardest part of the whole process would be moving the Gingerbread house to the Shaw conference center? So nerve racking you hold your breath over every bump in the road in hopes of not hearing anything fall off. Thankfully part of the team designed a stretcher to lock the gingerbread house in and make it easier to move, so the process of loading it in and out of vehicles and the Shaw conference center wasn’t as painful.

Would we do it again? Absolutely! The team has already started putting ideas away for next year.

Gingerbread House:

In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter, brown sugar, molasses, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and baking soda together until the mixture is smooth. Blend in the flour and water to make a stiff dough. Chill at least 30 minutes or until firm.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Cut out the following paper patterns for the gingerbread house template:

Two rectangles, 3 by 5 inches, to make the front and back of the house. Two rectangles, 3 by 5 1/2 inches for the roof. Two pieces for the ends of the house, 3 inches wide at the base, 3 inches to the roof line, and slanted to a peak 5 1/2 inches from the bottom. Four smaller rectangles, 1 1/2 by 1 inch for the roof and sides of the entryway. And one piece, 2 inches wide at the base, 1 1/2 inches to the roof line, and slanted to a peak 2 1/2 inches from the bottom of the front of the entryway.

Roll gingerbread dough out to edges on a large, rimless cookie sheet. Place paper patterns onto the rolled out dough. With a sharp, straight-edged knife, cut around each of the pieces, but leave pieces in place.

Bake at 375 degrees F for about 15 minutes until dough feels firm.
