The "my AC unit is dead, I need a new one" conversation is usually tilted towards the vendor knows the industry inside and out, and consumer knows very little. Luc on the education, "here's your options side" to Stephanie and Mason on the installation side, were top drawer. Acclaimed is business where phone calls/texts/emails are responded to very timely and professionally. No worries recommending them every day.

Very exceptional customer service and prompt repair.
Woke up to a house at 13 celsius. Called them and within a few hours they had responded, sent a technician and resolved the issue.

I would highly recommend this company. Luc came to our house and gave us an estimate. He was very professional and knowledgeable. He was never pushy and really took his time to go through everything with us.

The guys that did the installation were the best. Justin was so accommodating and really took his time with the install. We had a furnace, air conditioner and hot water tank all replaced and they did a phenomenal job. These guys know what they’re doing.

It’s pretty obvious by all the great reviews that this company really cares about customer service and making sure things are done right.

I had my furnace replaced last August and added an air conditioner. I had several quotes and I chose Acclaimed as they are a family run business and their service is excellent with very friendly staff. Luc was my salesman. I was impressed on his thoroughness in explaining everything and his patience with dealing with someone who knew nothing about furnaces and air conditioners.
Ed came out today to check the thermostat and air flow of the furnace and did some adjustments which I am very satisfied with. I was very impressed with his service . They are quick to respond to any service or questions.
I would highly recommend Acclaimed!

We just had Acclaimed! move our furnace vent and do maintenance + cleaning on our 2 furnaces. Overall the experience was great, excellent communication from the company and employees throughout the process, and really friendly workers who were knowledgeable and helpful. I love that they text you when the employee is arriving rather than have us just wait around wondering like so many other service companies. It's a great system. They are coming back to mount the vent on the outside of the house sometime in the next week and I'm sure they will follow through with it. Our cat freaked out and bolted outside while they were cleaning, they warned us to keep an eye on the animals and we did try, but she escaped. For a brief period we were worried she got sucked up by the vacuum, we got in touch with them and they seemed genuinely concerned about our cat. Fortunately, like they said, she showed up a couple hours later as she was hiding. Keep the critters in check while they clean! Overall highly recommend this company!

Signs Your Edmonton Heat Pump Needs Repair

Your heat pump works hard through Edmonton’s extreme weather. It usually gives warning signs before a complete breakdown, and catching them early can prevent major discomfort.

Inconsistent temperatures are often the first hint of trouble. If some rooms are too hot while others are cold, or the system can’t reach the set temperature, it’s a sign of a problem. Causes include low refrigerant, blocked airflow, or a faulty thermostat.

Unusual noises are another dead giveaway. Grinding, squealing, banging, or hissing sounds are a cry for help, indicating worn or broken internal components.

Have your energy bills suddenly jumped? A sudden spike in your utility bills suggests your heat pump is working inefficiently. Dirty coils, refrigerant leaks, or a struggling compressor can all increase power consumption.

Short cycling—when your system turns on and off frequently without completing a full cycle—puts immense stress on the equipment and shortens its lifespan.

While a light frost on your outdoor unit is normal in winter, heavy ice buildup on the coils is not. It points to a serious airflow or refrigerant problem.

Foul odours from your vents deserve immediate attention. Musty smells suggest mold or mildew, while a burning smell could indicate a dangerous electrical problem that requires urgent professional care.

When you notice any of these warning signs, check out our detailed guide on Heat Pump Repair Steps and then find specialists for heat pump repair in the Edmonton, AB area. to diagnose and fix the problem before it gets worse.

Common Noises and What They Mean

Learning to translate your heat pump’s noises helps you explain the issue when you call for service.

  • Grinding sounds typically point to worn motor bearings that need lubrication or replacement.
  • Squealing or screeching also often means failing motor bearings or, in older models, a worn belt.
  • Banging or clanking could be a loose panel, a shifted fan blade, or a failing compressor. A technician should find the source to prevent major damage.
  • Hissing noises are concerning because they usually signal a refrigerant leak, which reduces your system’s ability to heat or cool and requires immediate repair.

Performance Issues to Watch For

Pay attention to your system’s day-to-day performance.

  • Reduced airflow from your vents is often caused by a clogged air filter but can also indicate blocked ducts or a failing blower fan.
  • If your system won’t switch between heating and cooling, the reversing valve has likely failed.
  • A heat pump that’s constantly running without reaching the target temperature could be undersized, low on refrigerant, or have a weak compressor. This wastes energy and accelerates wear.
  • Leaking water around your indoor unit indicates a clogged condensate drain or a frozen coil. Unchecked leaks can cause significant water damage to your home.

Common Heat Pump Problems in Cold Climates

Edmonton’s harsh winters cause specific heat pump problems. Understanding these issues helps you spot them early.

  • Refrigerant leaks are a top concern. Low refrigerant reduces comfort and forces the system to work harder, risking damage to other components. You might hear a hissing sound or see ice.
  • The reversing valve is critical for switching between heating and cooling. If it fails, your system might get stuck in one mode.
  • Electrical control board issues can cause erratic behavior, like random cycling or failure to respond to the thermostat, especially in extreme cold.
  • The outdoor fan motor can wear out or fail. When the fan stops, heat exchange halts, leading to poor performance and ice buildup.
  • A frozen outdoor unit with heavy, persistent ice indicates a problem. It could be low refrigerant, a faulty defrost sensor, or the system being overwhelmed by extreme cold and humidity.

Before you find specialists for heat pump repair in the Edmonton, AB area., try a few quick checks. Make sure your thermostat is set correctly and has fresh batteries. Check your air filter—a clogged filter is a common culprit. Finally, verify that your heat pump’s breaker hasn’t tripped.

Why Do Heat Pumps Freeze in Winter?

Ice buildup is a real phenomenon in Edmonton. Understanding why it happens can help prevent serious damage.

  • Low refrigerant causes the coil temperature to drop excessively, leading to rapid ice formation that can choke the system.
  • Blocked airflow from dirty coils or debris prevents proper heat exchange, allowing moisture to freeze on the coils. Even drifting snow can cause this.
  • The defrost control periodically warms the outdoor coil to melt ice. If the sensor or control board fails, ice builds up unchecked.
  • Edmonton’s cold weather impact can challenge even the best systems. During prolonged extreme cold, the defrost cycle may struggle to keep up, which is why choosing a unit rated for our climate is vital.

Electrical and Mechanical Failures

Heat pumps contain numerous components that can fail under the stress of Edmonton winters.

  • Worn capacitors store energy to start motors. When they weaken, you might hear a clicking sound as the compressor or fan motor struggles to start.
  • Faulty contactors are switches that control power to major components. If they stick open, the unit won’t run; if they stick closed, it won’t stop.
  • Compressor issues are serious. The compressor is the heart of the system, and failure can cause loud noises or a complete lack of heating or cooling.
  • Blower motor failure means you’ll feel no air from your vents, even if the outdoor unit is running, because the indoor fan isn’t working.

When your heat pump fails in an Edmonton winter, you need a trustworthy technician fast. Finding a reliable pro is straightforward if you know what to look for.

Start by checking online reviews on platforms like Google. Look for patterns in feedback regarding reliability, communication, and skill. Word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and neighbours who understand Edmonton’s climate are also invaluable.

  • Calibrating the thermostat properly prevents unnecessary cycling, saving energy.
  • Restoring factory performance is the goal of professional repairs, which can lead to noticeable savings on your energy bills.

Understanding the typical timeline when you find specialists for heat pump repair in the Edmonton, AB area.

Many common issues, like a faulty capacitor or clogged filter, can be resolved with same-day repairs, as technicians carry common parts in their service vehicles. However, some situations require parts ordering for specific models. If a specific part needs to be ordered, the repair will take longer, but a reputable company will communicate the timeline clearly. Throughout the process, you should expect clear communication from the technician and scheduling of any necessary follow-ups to ensure the problem is fully resolved.

The Importance of Regular Maintenance for Preventing Repairs

Regular maintenance is the best way to prevent unexpected and costly heat pump breakdowns. When you schedule tune-ups with professionals who find specialists for heat pump repair in the Edmonton, AB area., you’re protecting your investment and your family’s comfort.

During a tune-up, technicians clean components, check refrigerant levels, and test electrical connections, catching minor issues before they become emergencies. A well-maintained heat pump simply lasts longer. We’ve seen units that receive annual care run efficiently for 15 years or more, while neglected systems often fail much sooner.

The energy savings alone make maintenance worthwhile. A clean, calibrated system runs more efficiently, which can lower your utility bills. The U.S. Department of Energy suggests that proper maintenance can save you up to 30% on heating and cooling costs.

Safety also matters. Maintenance includes safety checks for electrical hazards and refrigerant leaks. Furthermore, most manufacturer warranties require proof of annual professional maintenance to remain valid. Skipping tune-ups could void your coverage.

We recommend scheduling maintenance twice a year: in spring for cooling and in fall for heating. This proactive approach keeps your system ready for Edmonton’s extreme temperatures. For more insights, check our article on the Importance of Regular Heat Pump Service.

Frequently Asked Questions about Heat Pump Repair

Here are answers to common questions we hear from Edmonton homeowners when they find specialists for heat pump repair in the Edmonton, AB area.

How often should a heat pump be serviced?

Your heat pump should be serviced at least once a year. For optimal performance, we recommend twice-a-year service: once in spring for cooling and again in fall for heating. This schedule ensures both the cooling and heating functions are prepared for the upcoming season.

During these visits, technicians clean components, check refrigerant, test connections, and catch small problems before they become major emergencies. Additionally, most manufacturer warranties require annual service to remain valid.

For those in St. Albert looking for dedicated care, our Heat Pump Maintenance St. Albert service keeps your system running smoothly year-round.

Should I repair or replace my aging heat pump?

This decision depends on a few factors. If your heat pump is over 10-15 years old, replacement may be more cost-effective than a major repair. Similarly, if you’re facing frequent and costly repairs, the cumulative cost may justify investing in a new unit.

Newer heat pumps are far more energy-efficient, and the monthly savings on your utility bills can help offset the cost of a new system. Modern cold-climate models are specifically engineered to perform exceptionally well in Edmonton’s winters, offering superior comfort and efficiency.

If you’re leaning toward replacement, exploring your options for Heat Pump Installation Edmonton AB can give you a sense of what’s possible with today’s technology.

Can a heat pump work effectively in Edmonton’s winters?

Yes. While older models struggled, today’s technology is different. Modern cold-climate heat pumps are engineered to extract heat from the air even at temperatures of -25°C to -30°C.

Hybrid systems, which pair a heat pump with a high-efficiency furnace, offer the best of both worlds. The heat pump handles most of the heating, and the furnace provides backup during extreme cold snaps. This ensures you stay comfortable while the system operates at peak efficiency for the conditions.

Proper sizing and professional installation by technicians who understand our climate are critical for optimal performance. Overall, heat pumps provide more energy-efficient heating than a furnace alone, especially in the shoulder seasons, resulting in lower energy bills.

Conclusion

Your heat pump is essential for comfort through Edmonton’s demanding seasons. Signs of trouble include inconsistent temperatures, strange noises, high energy bills, and issues like refrigerant leaks or ice buildup.

When you need to find specialists for heat pump repair in the Edmonton, AB area., look for proven cold-climate experience, positive customer reviews, and a commitment to standing behind their work. However, most repairs can be prevented with regular maintenance. It extends your system’s life, improves efficiency, and catches small problems before they become expensive emergencies.
