Should My Furnace Be Making That Noise?

Like Kevin McCallister in ‘Home Alone’, we were always afraid of the furnace as kids. The loud bangs, weird humming noises, and steel groans were never fun to fall asleep to – but are they normal?

In this week’s Dear Keven Letter, Tami & Keven discuss the spooky noises that can come with a new-to-you furnace and give some advice on what’s normal and what you should call a service tech about.

What Causes My Furnace to Make So Much Noise?

There are many things that can contribute to all that noise in your furnace room:

  1. When the gas comes on to your furnace, you may hear the flames igniting: normal
  2. When the furnace fan comes on, you may hear some crackles and bangs in the duct work as it expands and contracts: normal
  3. If the loud bang comes from the furnace instead of the duct work: not necessarily normal

So whether your furnace is making normal noises or not so normal noises, we recommend you get regular maintenance done on your furnace to keep it in good working condition.
